Activewear clothes are made with synthetic fibers, which are designed to wick moisture off the body in order to dry fast. Due to this wicking benefit, these fabrics are oil-loving. This means they easily absorb oil, sweat, and bacteria (and have a tendency to hold on to them)

On top of this, 70% of laundry dirt is caused by body oils that are invisible to the naked eye – sweat, skin cells, salt, and a waxy fat called sebum. These soils accumulate and settle in the synthetic fibers which makes them hard to remove, and causes the odour you experienced.
